The practicalities are the same ones that make any Semporna base work: the town is the boat gateway to Mabul, Kapalai, Mataking and the Tun Sakaran Marine Park islands, roughly an hour and a quarter by road from Tawau airport, with the jetty, seafood restaurants and shops in easy reach. Arrive the evening before your island transfer, sleep properly, walk to your boat.
