Top 10 Dive Sites

Every diver who writes to us asks some version of the same question: with three islands and thirty-odd sites, where should the precious tanks go? After ten years of putting divers in this water, here is our honest top ten — four at Sipadan, four at Mabul, two at Kapalai. Different divers would shuffle the order; few would change the list.

Plan your diving trip to Sipadan

Sipadan's Top Dive Sites

Barracuda Point needs no selling — the swirling tornado of thousands of barracuda is the single image that put Sipadan on the world map, with grey reef sharks patrolling below. South Point is the big-animal lottery ticket: when hammerheads show anywhere at Sipadan, it's usually here. Turtle Cavern is the island's haunting one — a cathedral cave in the wall, entered only with the qualified guides. West Ridge gives you the classic wall at its calmest, turtles all the way.

Mabul's Top Dive Sites

Lobster Wall is Mabul's one true wall dive. Froggy Lair delivers exactly what the name promises — frogfish of every colour, plus the strange and small this island is famous for. Seaventures is the dive under the rig platform, an artificial reef that fish treat as downtown. Paradise is the gentle classic — shallow, calm, endlessly photogenic.

Kapalai's Top Dive Sites

The Jetty under Kapalai's resort is a legendary night and dusk dive — mandarinfish territory. Mid Reef rounds out the ten with sandbank macro at its easiest.
