Because of major renovations and construction developments, the Heritage Resort and Spa is now offering seven semi-detached chalets on stilts, Wi-fi access, an extended hallway, newly painted exterior, more luxurious rooms, a new cafe and larger restaurant which can accommodate a larger number of guests.

This resort, which was formerly known as Perkasa Hotel, has undergone quite a face-lift and upgrade.

Mt. Kinabalu Heritage Resort & Spa (formerly the Perkasa) sits on a hilltop at about 5,000 feet in Kundasang, with a commanding view of Mount Kinabalu — Southeast Asia's highest peak and the centrepiece of Malaysia's first World Heritage Site, Kinabalu National Park, a short drive away. The resort is about 90 km from Kota Kinabalu, roughly two hours by road.

Accommodation splits between rooms in the main tower and hillside chalets reached by a suspension footbridge through the gardens — the chalets are the newer, quieter option, and several look straight at the mountain. There's a restaurant and lounge on site, and the Heritage Spa (massage, body scrub, reflexology, steam and sauna) is the only spa operation in the Kundasang area. One thing first-timers don't expect: at this altitude the air is genuinely cool, so no air-conditioning is needed — pack a light jacket for the evenings.

Why do we, a diving operator, list a mountain resort? Because it's the natural other half of a Sabah trip. Many of our divers spend a few days here before or after the islands: sunrise views of the peak (be on the platform by 6:30, before the clouds), Kinabalu Park's trails, the Desa dairy farm, Poring Hot Springs and the Kundasang war memorial all within easy reach — and altitude days conveniently double as no-fly days after diving.
