Nunukan Island Resort is a private island dive resort located in East Kalimantan, Borneo, Indonesia.

Walking along the wooden jetty towards the private Nunukan Island Resort, a PADI dive resort surrounded by turquoise water in East Kalimantan.

Note: Scuba diving at Nunukan can be easily combined with diving at Sipadan (Tawau airport, Sabah, Borneo, Malaysia).

More about Nunukan Island Resort

Nunukan Island Resort stands on Bakungan Kecil, a four-acre private island at the southern tip of the Maratua Atoll, directly on the outer reef of the Celebes Sea. Opened in 2008 as the sister property to Nabucco and built to strict ecological standards, it's laid out in two halves: the restaurant and dive centre face the long jetty and open sea on one side, while 22 spacious bungalows line the white-sand beach on the lagoon side, the two connected by a wooden boardwalk through native vegetation.

The bungalows are the most comfortable in the atoll's price range: air-conditioned, four-poster beds, semi-open bathrooms with hot water, minibar, safe, and a private veranda with a day bed looking over the lagoon.

The diving starts at the end of the jetty: a four-kilometre house-reef wall you could spend a week on and not repeat yourself. Boat sites are ten minutes or less — Nunukan Express with its jacks and barracuda in the current, the calmer turtle territory of Bakungan — plus the atoll's signature channel dive, Big Fish Country, and for the exploratory-minded, the barely-dived Muaras atoll thirty minutes south. Eagle rays, leopard and nurse sharks, pygmy seahorses and leaf fish all feature.

Meals run half or full board, Asian and European, with a freshly cooked four-course dinner. Access is by boat from Berau, or via Maratua's airstrip. Like its sister island, Nunukan combines naturally with Sipadan in one Borneo itinerary — contact us to plan it.
