Bum Bum Island can be reached from the town of Semporna (Sabah, Borneo).
Semporna and Pulau Bum Bum Island are separated by sea: a one-kilometer stretch of the Terusan Tando Bulong channel.

The Tun Sakaran Marine Park is a short 20-minute boat ride from Pulau Bum Bum. Day trips can be arranged to the eight islands and two reefs located there.
Seaweed harvesting is active on the island. Its use as a nutritional supplement and medicine is on the rise. The seaweed farmers at Kampung Lok Butun are establishing viable, commercial businesses due to the recent demand for it.
Pulau Bum Bum is partly forested and one of the largest islands in Darvel Bay. Its irregular shape is similar to an overturned triangle and covers a 45km² area. The island is 12.8km long and it is 19.7km wide.
