Seaventures Platform

The dive under the Seaventures platform is unlike anything else on this coast: a converted oil rig standing on its legs off Mabul, whose shadowed understructure has become one of the region's great artificial reefs. Between 12 and 18 metres, the pylons and debris field below are colonised wall-to-wall — nudibranchs in absurd variety, frogfish tucked into growth on the legs, resident crocodile fish camouflaged against the structure itself, stonefish doing their flat impressions on the bottom, moray eels in every crevice, and clouds of baitfish using the structure the way fish use any city: for shelter, food and traffic. photography credits shows what this actually looks like.

Why diving below the rig is special?

Two things make it special beyond the novelty. First, the visibility — often around 20 metres here, generous by Mabul standards, so the industrial silhouette overhead gives the whole dive a cinematic quality. Second, the density: hard structure in open water concentrates life, and thirty minutes under the rig produces a critter list that open reef takes three dives to match. The site sits directly under Seaventures Dive Rig itself — resort guests treat it as their house reef with elevator access, in the most literal sense — but boats from across Mabul dive it too.
