More about Mataking Diving

Mataking wears two hats, and wears both well: it's the honeymoon island of the Semporna coast — one resort, white sand, no village — and at the same time a serious dive destination, because its position on the edge of deeper water brings currents, and currents bring the big stuff. Grey reef sharks are regulars, hammerheads and manta rays make appearances, and the visibility on a good day is the crystal kind the brochures don't have to exaggerate.

Mataking Dive Sites

Scalloped hammerhead shark cruises through deep blue water at Sipadan delivering a bucket-list pelagic encounter for adventurous divers.
  • North Point
  • Coral Garden
  • The House Reef
  • The Shipwreck

North Point is the pelagic station — hook in when the current runs and watch the parade. Coral Garden and the House Reef are the gentler half of the island, dense hard-coral terrain with turtles and schooling fusiliers, well within reach of newer divers. And then there's The Shipwreck: a purpose-sunk vessel that doubles as an artificial reef and, famously, home to the world's first underwater post office — yes, you can genuinely post a waterproof card from depth, and yes, everyone does.

Because the reef wraps the island, Mataking works in most conditions; the dive centre simply picks the sheltered side. Non-diving partners get real snorkelling straight off the beach, which is a bigger factor in honeymoon harmony than any spa menu.

Mataking is reached by boat from Semporna, and stays are at Mataking Reef Resort. Contact us for packages — it combines well with a Sipadan permit day for certified divers.
