More about Mabul Backpackers

Mabul Backpackers is a clean, newly built overwater longhouse in a quiet corner of Mabul island — the budget way to actually sleep over the water in one of the world's great muck-diving destinations. Rooms run from simple dorm beds to twin-share and air-conditioned seaview rooms, and the rate includes all three meals, served in the open-deck restaurant, with a long jetty leading out to a lounge area over the sea. Tea and coffee flow all day.

Let's set expectations the honest way: this is a longhouse on stilts, not a resort. Walls are wooden, comforts are basic, and the magic is in what's outside — sunsets off the deck, the Celebes Sea under your floorboards, and the village life of Mabul a short walk away. For a lot of divers, that's precisely the trip they came for.

The diving is the same diving the luxury resorts sell: Mabul's famous macro sites — frogfish, pygmy seahorses, blue-ring octopus, mandarin fish at dusk — are minutes away, Kapalai is next door, and Sipadan day trips run subject to the permit system (staying several nights improves your odds; ask us how the permits work before you book anywhere on the island).

Mabul Backpackers suits backpackers, solo divers and anyone who'd rather spend the budget underwater than on the pillow. Contact us for availability and a dive-and-stay package.
