Crocodile Avenue

Crocodile Avenue, on the north side of Mabul, is the island's benchmark macro dive — the site guides mean when they say "classic Mabul." The name comes from the crocodilefish that lie flat on the sandy floor doing their driftwood impression, and around them the avenue fills in with seahorses, snake eels periscoping from the sand, the occasional ornate ghost pipefish, and the sheer abundance of small, strange residents that made this island's reputation. Crocodile flatheads on an easy 5–20 m profile

The profile is friendly — 5 to 20 metres, Open Water level, usually calm — and the technique matters more than the depth: stay off the bottom, move slowly, and let the guide's pointer do the finding until your own eyes calibrate. Ten metres of visibility is typical and entirely sufficient; nothing here is spotted from a distance anyway. Our Whitetip Avenue page goes further into this.

It's also a superb night dive: the sand comes alive after dark, and the crocodilefish eyes reflecting in torchlight explain the street name better than any daytime pass.
